Shyla Ashley White
Born extraordinarily gifted and years ahead of her peers, Shyla became the de facto mother and caretaker of her family at age 11 after her mother was murdered. She graduated high school at 14 and college with a master's degree at 16 — all while raising her infant sister and supporting her grieving brother. At 20 she became a detective to hunt down her mother's killer.
History
Shyla was born with a maturity and intellect far beyond her years — doing high school work at 9 and college-level material at 11. When she was 11, her mother was murdered just a week after her baby sister Ellen was born. Her father fell into a deep depression and alcoholism, leaving Shyla to care for Ellen, raise Zane, clean the house, cook meals, and do the laundry — while simultaneously doing college-level coursework. She deprived herself of sleep nightly to stay with Zane after his nightmares and to tend to Ellen. The compounding stress caused several panic attacks before she was even 12. She hid her suffering from Zane because she knew their father wouldn't step up, and she refused to let her siblings feel abandoned. As Zane grew older and began lashing out — pulling pranks, skipping school, talking about bringing their mother back — she helped him find healthier ways to process the grief. She was hurting too. She graduated high school at 14 with a 4.0 GPA, then earned a master's degree in criminal justice from college at 16. She couldn't join the police academy until she turned 18. At 20 she became a detective with one goal: finding her mother's killer. She chose to transfer to Sapphire City rather than be across states from her brother.
