Our Foundation

About Us

We are a nonprofit foundation dedicated to helping individuals facing mental health challenges find control, connection, and purpose through cooking. Because when life feels overwhelming, focusing on the next step can make all the difference.

Who We Are

Born from Love.
Built for Hope.

Make A Grilled Cheese was founded in memory of Zackary Heatley—a creative, deeply observant, and profoundly human young man whose life continues to inspire this mission every day.

After Zackary's death, his father, Daniel, wanted to create something meaningful in his son's name. Not a monument. Not a memorial that would sit quietly in the background. Something alive. Something that could make a difference in someone else's life.

Zackary experienced the world in extraordinary detail, yet often struggled to find a sense of control in his own life. His story became the inspiration for a simple belief: when life feels overwhelming, having something we can focus on, make decisions about, and accomplish for ourselves can make a meaningful difference.

Make A Grilled Cheese exists to help individuals discover cooking as one of those tools. Every meal begins with a series of manageable steps and simple choices. Chop the vegetables. Stir the sauce. Toast the bread. Each decision is ours to make, each action gives us something to focus on, and each completed step reminds us that we still have the ability to influence what happens next.

Through approachable recipes, step-by-step guidance, and encouragement to explore cooking at their own pace, we help individuals develop practical skills they can turn to when life feels difficult. The goal isn't simply to prepare a meal. It's to experience the satisfaction of creating something with their own hands, recognize their own capabilities, and discover that even overwhelming challenges can become more manageable when approached one step at a time.

We cannot always control the circumstances we face, but we can find moments when our choices matter. Those moments can help us regain focus, build confidence, and recognize that moving forward doesn't require having everything figured out.

Because hope doesn't always begin with solving everything. It can begin with recognizing that we still have the ability to take the next step.

One grilled cheese at a time.

What We Stand For

Our Values

Control

We cannot control everything life brings our way, but we can choose where to begin, what to focus on, and what to do next. Every small decision is an opportunity to regain a sense of control.

Focus

When life feels overwhelming, we do not have to solve everything at once. Giving our attention to one manageable task allows us to step away from the bigger picture and concentrate on what we can accomplish right now.

Capability

We are often capable of more than we recognize. Creating something with our own hands provides tangible evidence of our abilities and reminds us that meaningful progress can begin with a single step.
