Bruschetta
What we put into something matters more than how much we put into it.
Beyond the Ingredients
Why This Recipe Matters
Bruschetta is a remarkably simple dish, but the quality of its ingredients makes an enormous difference. Fresh, ripe tomatoes, fragrant basil, and good olive oil create flavors that canned tomatoes, dried herbs, and inexpensive oil struggle to match. With so few ingredients, there's very little to hide behind. Each one contributes something important to the finished dish.
It's a reminder that doing more isn't always the same as doing better.
We often measure our efforts by how much time we spend, how many things we accomplish, or how much we manage to fit into a day. But the quality of our attention and the care we bring to something can matter far more than the quantity of our efforts.
We can't always give everything our full attention, nor should we expect ourselves to. Our time and energy are limited, and choosing where to invest them is an important part of taking control of our lives.

The Takeaway
We don't have to do everything to make something meaningful. By giving our attention to what matters most, we can make better use of what we have and find greater satisfaction in what we choose to do.
What You Need
Ingredients
Serves 4 servings
How to Make It
Directions
- 1
Combine diced tomatoes, minced garlic, basil, 2 tablespoons olive oil, and balsamic vinegar in a bowl.
- 2
Season with salt and pepper. Toss gently and set aside to marinate for at least 5 minutes.
- 3
Brush both sides of the bread slices lightly with olive oil.
- 4
Toast under a broiler for 1–2 minutes per side, or grill on a grill pan until golden with grill marks.
- 5
While the bread is still hot, rub one side of each slice with a cut clove of garlic. The bread acts like a grater and infuses garlic flavor directly.
- 6
Spoon the tomato mixture generously over each slice.
- 7
Finish with an extra drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of flaky salt.
- 8
Top with shaved Parmesan if desired. Serve immediately.
From the Kitchen
Small Things That Matter
Ripe, in-season tomatoes make a world of difference — taste one before you start and you'll understand why
Rubbing raw garlic on warm toast infuses flavor without any cooking — it's a classic technique worth remembering
Make the tomato mixture ahead and let it sit; the flavors meld and deepen as it rests
Serve bruschetta right away — toast gets soggy quickly once the tomatoes are piled on
Variations & Additions
